NCVER's new Managing Director

Monday, September 29 2014

The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) announced the appointment of its new Managing Director – Dr Craig Fowler.

The Chair of the NCVER Board, Professor Peter Shergold, in announcing Dr Fowler’s appointment stated, "The Board is delighted to announce that, beginning in late October, Dr Craig Fowler will become the next Managing Director of NCVER."

“Craig has worked in both the private and public sectors, including at very senior levels of the South Australian public service for the last 11 years,” Professor Shergold said. “He possesses an exceptional depth of understanding of vocational education and training and the national training system, and a deep sense of the importance of skills acquisition to Australia's future prosperity."

Professor Shergold emphasized that Dr Fowler will bring to his leadership a strong background in research methodology and commitment to the value that statistical data can play in informing evidence-based policy.

"His experience will be invaluable, given that NCVER has been tasked with collecting information on total VET activity for the first time. A unique student identifier will provide a powerful new source of analysis but its introduction will need to be managed with the utmost integrity,” said Professor Shergold. “Craig, who is respected across the entire sector, sees it as a key task to work collaboratively across government jurisdictions, education providers and industry bodies on these challenging initiatives."

Dr Fowler is excited by the opportunity to lead NCVER into the future. He will take up the role in late October and is able to provide a further statement once he has commenced at NCVER.

NCVER will continue to be led by Managing Director Rod Camm until Dr Fowler commences his role, providing for a well-managed transition for the Company and staff.

In announcing Dr Fowler’s appointment, Professor Shergold paid tribute to Mr Rod Camm. "At a personal level, I am deeply disappointed to see Rod leave. He has had a very positive impact in his time with NCVER. The Board will miss his strong leadership but fully understand the difficult decision he has had to make. We look forward to working closely with him in his new role as CEO of ACPET."
