Good Morning Everyone

I am writing this piece for NMU in the Darwin Airport having attended the Northern Territory Training Awards last night. It was a very successful night with over 460 people in attendance. The NT government is planning an even bigger event next year when they will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the awards. A pretty impressive mile stone for any awards event.

The following updates are provided hopefully for your edification and enjoyment.

  • Higher Education and Research Reform Amendment Bill 2014.

The debate on this Bill is continuing in the Senate and the corridors of Parliament House. It is important that all members but especially those involved in Higher Education are actively trying to engage Senators in discussion about the Bill and the advantages to all Australians but especially students. If it is possible to get Senators to visit private higher education institutions this is strongly encouraged as it is clear that many of them have very limited knowledge of the quality of services provided by the private sector.

It is important to focus on the opening up of the market and that this will be good for students. It will increase choice and over time will see greater competition and for some courses there will be a reduction of fees. ACPET does not have a view on the appropriate level of interest to be charged on loans this is a decision to be resolved between government and students.

ACPET staff have been meeting with Senators where ever possible but local support will be critical in the next few weeks.

  • ACPET Member wins South Australian Large Training Provider of the Year.

Quality Training has won the large provider of the year award in the South Australian Training Awards. Our congratulations go to Richard Finlayson, Board Director of ACPET, and his team. Further information on the South Australian Awards can be found in the South Australian section of today’s NMU.

  • Higher Education and other education sectors in India

As a result of my recent visit to India I have been able to access a number of reports on the higher education sector in India and also an over view of the whole Indian education practice. These reports will be uploaded into the Member Only section of the website later today.
The reports are:

  • Foreign Universities in the Indian Higher Education Sector. The report includes some analysis of provide provider participation in this space.
  • Annual Status of Higher Education of States and UTs in India
  • Indian Education Practice – Partnering for Success.

Although these reports are produced by Deloitte and contain a level of self promotion they also provide some useful background information about the Indian education system and current and future opportunities.

I wish you all an enjoyable and productive week.
