As I start to prepare this NMU article it is impossible for me to stop thinking about the enormous tragedy that is MH 17. Our thoughts and sincere sympathy go out to all the relatives and friends of those who have lost their lives in the tragedy. It puts many of the issues we face in to a very different perspective. For me it reinforces the fragility of life and the importance of family and friends.

As the Acting CEO it is important for me to ensure all member services continue to be provided in accordance with members’ wishes.  We received over 390 responses to our member survey and you made some very clear suggestions for improvement even though there was a 90% satisfaction rate with ACPET’s overall performance.

There has been a lot going on with all the end of financial year activities and our Auditors being in the office. I have been extremely pleased with the support I have received from all the ACPET staff.

We have been working hard on a new set of ASTAS arrangements and will be in a position to make an announcement shortly.

We have responded to feedback from members that they do not see a need for the 1800 help line.  Members seeking assistance and advice prefer to ring State Offices in the first instance, so we have decided to support this clear member preference. All other parts of the quality support service are still available and we continue to receive very positive feedback about our Health Checks, thanks to Catherine and Maria, and the Professional Development offerings that Leah facilitates.

The Board met again on Friday to ensure the appointment of a new CEO is progressed as a matter of great importance. The Board has been very pleased with the response to the advertisements and have already commenced talks with some very impressive candidates. The commitment of the volunteer Directors should be recognised by the membership. They are committing considerable time, energy and expertise for the good of the industry and to good governance of the organisation.

Please note that elections will be held in Victoria, Queensland and the Northern Territory so members in those regions should be on the lookout for election material from Elections Australia. It is often overlooked by members so please see be aware that it is on its way.

I look forward to returning to the usual focus of this section of NMU next week. There will be some significant meetings this week and I will share some of the policy developments with you next Monday.
