Supporting our leaders to lead
Monday, November 25 2013
High-level, educational leaders in tertiary education and training across Australia - no less than anyone else - need professional development support so they can take their leadership into new realms where their organisations can grow, renew, flourish, and expand into new markets.
Almost without our realising it, a whole new generation of educational leadership has emerged over the past 20 years: people who mostly started out as classroom teachers, took their educational vision and expertise out on the road, set up their own educational organisations and emerged as leaders of multi-million dollar educational organisations and as leaders in educational thought leadership, both here in Australia and globally.
We call this ‘educational entrepreneurship’. And ACPET is enormously proud to count so many of Australia's leading educational entrepreneurs among its members.
Last weekend’s inaugural ACPET CEO’s Executive Retreat, which I was proud to attend, took place with a select group of ACPET leaders at Sydney’s picturesque Coogee Beach.
This event was the first of its kind for ACPET and brought together CEOs in a confidential and relaxing environment for high-level, peer-on-peer learning and sharing.
In pioneering this professional development event for ACPET, we realised that in putting our all into supporting the whole private education and training sector, we do at times ‘miss bits’. And a rather important ‘bit’ is our CEOs, whose own needs can get forgotten.
We heard loudly and clearly from our participating CEOs just how busy they are and how ACPET membership is, and more importantly can improve, to support them and their businesses.
So it was tremendously pleasing that our CEOs endorsed the range of products and services ACPET has developed to meet member needs, especially over the past 18 months.
We also heard clearly (to borrow words from one participant) that ‘I’m so busy with my head down running the business, I need to get my head up and look around‘. There’s no doubt that our leaders also need support and practical solutions to help them keep up to speed on what’s happening in the sector and must-know policy developments.
The Retreat certainly achieved that.
Here's to the first of many more ACPET CEO and Executive activities.
