ACPET members welcomed the opportunity to join with Department of Training and Workforce Development officers in ‘round table’ discussions last Tuesday, sharing information and working through multiple issues associated with new apprenticeship and traineeship arrangements in Western Australia.

All key stakeholders were represented at the meeting, with robust discussions leading to a better appreciation of the role and objectives of the Apprenticeship Office, as well as an understanding that timely information and open communication will be essential to meeting those objectives.  Detailed discussions around audit and compliance, contract approvals and timeframes raised more general concerns that employers will increasingly disengage from accredited training unless (and even if) these issues are resolved.  Several employers at the meeting gave examples which illustrated the point.

The meeting itself was a positive first step. ACPET appreciates the DTWD and Apprenticeship Office, Dr Ross Kelly and Ms Karen Ho in particular, making their time and staff available for the meeting.  Thank you to all who attended.
