Members would have received ACPET’s email alert last Thursday regarding our response to the Federal Government’s release of its intended actions to improve Australia’s student visa system.

Senator Evans announced at the National Press Club, as part of the launch of Skills Week, the establishment of a government agency to help employers recruit and train workers and a push to raise apprenticeship pay rates.

Australian Capital Territory

CHARLTON BROWN students Samantha O’Dwyer, Kyoko Yamazaki, Fumiko Yobayashi and Madeleine Scott set off for Sri Lanka on Thursday 15 September as part of the Global Linkages Program 2011.

ACPET has received advice from Trade and Investment Queensland following on from the Review of the Queensland Government’s support for the Export of Education and Training (2006–2011) completed in February this year; that a new independent industry council has been established.

Interested members are advised of the opportunity to get up-to-date on trade, business opportunities and current events in the Solomon Islands.

South Australia
ACPET SA is pleased to continue its Professional Conversation Series, which emerged from a consultation with members during our Higher Education Forum in May followed by a member focus group to plan the first events.

The Australian Council for Private Education and Training extends its warmest congratulations to all winners and nominees honoured at the SA education and training sector's night of nights: the 2011 South Australian Training Awards.

These briefing sessions will outline the application and selection process for Skills for All training providers.

In addition to providing an update on the status of regulatory changes and skill reforms, this workshop will outline AQTF, ESOS and Higher Education requirements for providers to ensure equitable access to education and training opportunities, and student support services to facilitate equitable outcomes and comparable retention rates for all students.

It can be challenging to engage young people in Vocational Education and Training, and with the SA Skills for All reforms coming on line in 2012, there are likely to be more youth engaging in training, necessitating innovative strategies for achieving high retention and completion levels.

SkillsVIC have commenced their new audit strategy for government funded training, with an emphasis on business processes and controls alongside compliance with the minimum requirements of the Skills for VIC Service Agreement and appropriate expenditure by providers.

Last Monday, ACPET ran an Information Session for members on the two 2012 Workforce Development Initiatives: Teaching Fellowships and Coaching and Mentoring Pilot Program.

The 2012 Job Guide is a 39 year old Federal Government publication that Hobsons produce on behalf of DEEWR.

Last Friday, Chloe Dyson supported ASQA members to understand the implications of the NVR for their RTOs.

As part of its Government Agendas and Initiatives Series, ACPET is running An Introduction to VET for new RTO staff.

As part of its Business Support Series, ACPET is running an Advanced facilitation Skills for Trainers and Assessors.

Western Australia

Due to high demand ACPET WA is considering running a third, half-day workshop for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) affected by the current changes to Vocational Education and Training (VET). 

LabTech Training (LTT), an active member of ACPET WA, works hard to train laboratory technicians and technical officers for employment in commercial testing and servicing laboratories across a wide field of industries such as:

ACPET WA is thrilled to see that Eduardo Pena, who trained at the Australian College of Training (ACT) in Victoria Park, now employed by Harvest Freshcuts, has won the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Training Award at the recent Western Australian Training Awards. 

Thousands of workers in the resource, construction, infrastructure and renewable energy sectors will benefit from $28 million of Australian Government funding to ease critical skills shortages.  Minister for Skills and Jobs, Senator Chris Evans, has announced successful projects under the $200 million Critical Skills Investment Fund (CSIF), which in partnership with industry, will train new workers and up-skill existing workers to meet demand.
