National Monday Update Issue:

1. Education and training roundtable with the Australian High Commissioner to South Africa
2. International Business Cadet Program - enhance your offshore profile

1. Education and training roundtable with the Australian High Commissioner to South Africa

QETI is hosting a roundtable with the South African High Commissioner on opportunities for education and training providers on 15 September.

After good growth in 2009, South African student enrolments into Queensland year to date 2010 have declined but remain a market of interest for Queensland’s education and training providers.

South Africa is a middle-income, emerging market with an abundant supply of natural resources. The country also has well-developed financial, legal, communications, energy, and transport sectors. At around 5.3 per cent of gross domestic product, South Africa’s current investment in its education and training sector is one of the highest in the world.

The QETI roundtable is an excellent opportunity to acquaint the High Commissioner with your activities in this market and to hear her views first-hand.

Date: Wednesday 15 September 2010
Time: 10.55 am for an 11.00 am start - 11.45 am
RSVP: Register by 5.00 pm Friday 10 September 2010

2. International Business Cadet Program - enhance your offshore profile

Members are advised of an opportunity to sponsor a business cadet as part of the 2011 Trade and Investment Queensland International Business Cadet Program.

This cadetship program has operated as a successful partnership between the Queensland Government and industry sponsors for the past 12 years. During this time, over 60 cadets have participated in the program undertaking research and providing market insights for nearly 70 Queensland companies and business organisations.

The program provides Queensland businesses with access to in-market knowledge, international networks and government resources to increase export sales. The cadet is employed for 29 weeks, which includes 20 weeks working in one of Trade and Investment Queensland’s overseas offices with the balance of time mostly spent with the sponsor company in Queensland, including before the international placement to understand the export product or service, the company’s export ambitions and to collaboratively develop a research project.

Sponsorship of a cadet is $30,000 (including GST). This works out at $1,500 per week for the duration of the cadet’s placement overseas. Once paid, all other costs including airfares, accommodation, salary, allowances and insurance are met by Trade and Investment Queensland.

Benefits for sponsors include:

  • Targeted market research or project – guided by the sponsor
  • Cost-effective international market entry
  • Valuable insights into growing markets
  • Increased international market exposure and the opening of ‘doors’ that can often be difficult for private organisations to achieve
  • Direct access to the Queensland Government’s extensive range of services in Queensland and abroad.
