The depth and diversity of Queensland’s successful education and training partnerships with China were under the spotlight today at a special award presentation during Queensland Week at Shanghai World Expo 2010.
Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries and Rural and Regional Queensland Tim Mulherin presented the Queensland-China Education and Training Awards for Excellence.
“These awards acknowledge the strong international education partnerships between China and Queensland,” the Minister said.
“They also recognise the achievements of Chinese students and alumni of Queensland education institutions.
“In 2009, more than 17,000 Chinese students enrolled with Queensland education institutions and providers.
“This represents 16.5 percent of our total overseas student enrolments.
“Over the past 21 years, the Queensland-Shanghai Sister State Agreement has guided collaborative projects in schools and other education institutions in Queensland and China, including student and teacher exchanges.”
The Minister said since 2005, the Queensland Government has hosted the Queensland Education and Training International Awards for Excellence.
“These awards highlighted the performance of international students, academic and professional staff,” he said.
“They also highlight the collaborative partnerships between Queensland and other countries.
“This year, as part of World Expo, we are presenting these special awards focused only on our successful education partnerships with China.”
Mr Mulherin said the awards showcase some of the best collaborative education projects and outcomes between Queensland and China in recent years.
“The Queensland Government is committed to forging stronger links with China, particularly by further developing our research and educational alliances,” he said.
“In partnership with industry and student groups, we are firmly focused on ensuring a quality, safe and beneficial experience for international students who come to Queensland.
“Most importantly, I hope their experience leads to a rewarding career.
“I congratulate our award winners today. Education and training will continue to be at the forefront of Queensland’s engagement with China.”
Queensland’s world-class education system offers courses for international students in more than 350 public and private institutions.
Last year, the State welcomed 103,000 international students from 160 countries to study, conduct research and develop their skills.
In addition to today’s awards ceremony, the Queensland Government is supporting two other education-focussed events in Shanghai during Queensland Week.
Last Saturday saw the finals of the sixth Queensland Cup English Speaking Competition, and tomorrow there will be a market seminar for Chinese education agents.
