multicultural event by students at hays international college

National Monday Update Issue:

The international students of Diploma of Lifestyle & Leisure at Hays International College were assigned a major assessment piece - to design, develop and implement an authentic event to meet the needs of the elderly within Aged Care Facilities of this area.

The result, three students, Jasvinder Kaur, Sukjhit Kaur and Anthony Wu, under the guidance of trainer Garry Hilditch [see photo], provided a spectacular Multicultural Event for approximately 40 elderly residents from John R Hannah and Inala Aged Care Facilities, along with a group from St Theresa Aged and Retired Services.

Amidst the myriad of requirements for a holistic unit of assessment, meetings were minuted, sponsors contacted, risk assessments carried out, permission, insurances, transport, as well as food and entertainment organised. As there were many guests from the Aged Care Facilities, the student team both provided and supervised the provision of care by the Certificate IV Aged Care students to their elderly guests on the day.

The Hays students organised for a rich variety of multicultural entertainment. The performances came from The Salsa Foundation, Ya Hui Performing Arts Association, and also included a belly dancing act from Aarti, as well as a unique and exciting performance from Indian drummer, Marvinder. All of these acts were enthusiastically received by the guests. The students themselves also contributed to the event with singing and dancing, being intrinsically involved with the entire proceedings. Music was provided by Rang's Entertainment, and the spectacular lunch was cooked on site by Certificate III Hays' Hospitality students, who were also participating in the provision of their own holistic unit.

The Multicultural event could not have gone on without the students' exceptional work in raising sponsorship. This sponsorship came from Bunnings (Middleborough Rd), The Rotary Club of Box Hill, Paradise Restaurant (Wheeler’s Hill) and Baker's Delight (Box Hill), plus the lucky door prizes donated by many local people.

Ultimately, the Multicultural Event was more than an assessment task for the students. It demonstrated to all, the skills of the students, their employability and outstanding capacity to meet the needs of others in their community - verifying the value of the Lifestyle and Leisure / Leisure and Health course at Hays International College.
