intercultural communication with indian students: a workshop for the international education and training sector

National Monday Update Issue: 

The aim of this workshop is to explore strategies for interacting and communicating with students from Indian backgrounds. 

The workshop will take a combined approach and link cross-cultural literature and theories with practical application and activities. It will be interactive and case studies will be provided.


The workshop's aims are to:
  • raise awareness of culture and cultural differences in relation to Indian students
  • develop understanding of student expectations and issues arising from mismatch of these expectations
  • identify issues of concern in relation to teaching and managing Indian students
  • explore strategies for managing and resolving issues identified.

The topics include:
  • comparative learning styles in relation to Indian students
  • cultural differences and expectations
  • socio-cultural issues, values and attitudes
  • key factors that lead to conflict and misunderstanding
  • strategies for managing potential conflict situations.
The workshop will also touch on issues of diversity, inclusivity and cultural adaptation.
 
About the presenter:
Professor Prem Ramburuth is Associate Dean Education at the Australian School of Business, University of New South Wales and Professor in International Business. Prem researches and teaches in the areas of Cross Cultural and Diversity Management in Higher Education and Business, and her publications focus on issues in cross cultural learning and teaching, intercultural communication, and managing cultural diversity.
Prem has taught in the area of Cross Cultural Communication and Cross Cultural Management in several countries and has received a number of awards for her work including the UNSW Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
 
Who should attend:
The workshop is designed for teaching, professional, management and support staff, who interact with international students, in particular students from Indian backgrounds. Participants require no previous knowledge or experience. The workshop will provide theoretical and practical knowledge and insights at the introductory level, and progress to higher levels, consistent with the experience of the participants.
