northern territory government media release – new program launched

National Monday Update Issue:

The Territory Government welcomed the start of a new training partnership with Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) that will benefit students from Jabiru and Gunbalanya.

Minister for Education and Training Chris Burns said this partnership will help local students access valuable training and get jobs.

“We are committed to creating more opportunities for students in remote areas to get access to training so they are ready for jobs in the future,” Dr Burns said.

“This is a new and innovative way to deliver Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs for students in the region, which will bring benefits now and in the future for the students.

“The first 11 students will initially take a Certificate 1 Workready Program in Engineering and advance their studies and job placements from there.’

“ERA will host the students in work placements at the Ranger Uranium Mine as part of their training.
“The first group of students are aged 14 and 15 are from Jabiru and Gunbalanya.

“This is helping prepare these students for entry into school-based apprenticeships in trades and get jobs,” Dr Burns said.

The new VET program is being delivered in a partnership between ERA, the West Arnhem College, Taminmin College, the NT Department of Education and Training, and Group Training NT.

VET and Workready programs are important components of the Smart Territory strategy to deliver better education outcomes across the Territory.
