National Monday Update Issue:

The first meeting of the Premier’s Council on International Education was held last Wednesday at the Department of Premier & Cabinet.

Melinda Larkin, Executive Officer, ACPET NSW together with other industry leaders representing public and private education, NSW police, Tourism, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, student bodies, Community Relations Commission and the Consul General of India met to provide support for issues affecting the international student community.

The Council is chaired by Mr. Brendan O’Reilly, Director General of the Department of Premier and Cabinet, NSW.

The Council has been established in response to one of 13 initiatives of the NSW Ministerial Taskforce on International Education put forward at the end of 2009 and is now responsible for developing, coordinating and supporting the implementation of the NSW Government priorities and initiatives for international students and international education.

“This unique body ensures we are getting direct and constructive advice on issues that are affecting the international student community, and can take action if required.” Ms Keneally said.

The Premier’s Council on International Education provides:

  • A central area of responsibility within government to consider and respond to the needs of international students;
  • Specialist advice to NSW Government in its dealings with other States and the Commonwealth; and
  • Opportunities to improve social activity and support for international students

The Premier’s Council on International Education will also coordinate the initiatives arising from the International Student Strategy of Australia.
