fire safety for students

National Monday Update Issue:

Fire safety for students is a major concern for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) as they have seen students injured and die from fire related events.

MFB has created new Student Fire Safety brochures which are part of an overall 2010 campaign to raise fire safety awareness among students living away from home, particularly aimed at international students. You can access these brochures from here and here.

Central to this campaign is the availability of firefighters to speak at campus orientations/safety days. If an ACPET member would like a firefighter to speak at their orientation or safety seminars throughout the year, they can email mflorio [at] mfb [dot] vic [dot] gov [dot] au (Marc Florio) of MFB. indicating when and where a presentation is required. At orientations/seminars, firefighters will distribute the new brochures to students.

In early May ACPET in conjunction with the MFB, Victoria Police and Surf Lifesaving Victoria to run a seminar for members on specific safety information pertaining to international and domestic students. This would cover; fire safety - MFB; personal safety - Police; beach safety - Life Saving Victoria. At the end of the presentation a discussion will be held with members and the Emergency Services representatives about the most effective means to disseminate information to students. Further information on this session will be distributed in the next few weeks.
