National Monday Update Issue: 

1. New NCVER Resource: Disability and vocational education and training
The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) has developed an online resource which brings together all of its statistics and research on people with a disability and VET.

Disability and vocational education and training features information on topics such as diversity, participation, accessing support and employment outcomes.

This resource also contains data from NCVER’s three major statistical collections; the National VET Provider Collection, the National Apprentice and Trainee Collection and the Student Outcomes Survey.

2. Latest apprentice and trainee statistics released
The National Centre for Vocational Education Research has released the Australian apprentice and trainee statistics for the September 2009 quarter.

In total there were 425 500 apprentices and trainees in-training as at the end of September 2009, a decrease of 2.4% from the previous year.

Comparing apprentice and trainee activity in the year to 30 September 2009 with the year to 30 September 2008:

  • the number of people commencing a trade apprenticeship decreased by 20.5%
  • the number of people commencing a non-trade apprenticeship or traineeship decreased by 0.8%

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the decline in the number of people starting a trade apprenticeship has steadied, with a 0.6% decrease in the September quarter 2009. Looking back over the previous 18 months, trade apprenticeship commencements declined 25.1%.

This publication contains information about apprentices and trainees; those people who are undertaking vocational training through contracted arrangements. The publication includes information about their personal, employment and training contract characteristics. State and territory breakdowns are also contained in the publication.

 

3. Call for papers and presentations now open
‘No Frills’ Conference, 7-9 July 2010, Perth WA

Calling all practitioners and researchers! If you have research on vocational education and training (VET) to share then come along and present your findings at the 19th National Vocational Education and Training Research Conference ‘No Frills’.

Co-sponsored by NCVER, Polytechnic West and the Central Institute of Technology, ‘No Frills’ focuses on strategies, observations and proven practices that can influence policy and practice for an even better education and training system in Australia.

We are looking for papers that rely on sound evidence-based research and presentations that are informative, engaging, relevant and thought provoking.
