National Monday Update Issue:

A project facilitated by the Eidos Institute entitled the Indigenous Sunrise Project aimed at improving the access and participation of Indigenous Australians in higher education, has been released.

This report facilitated by the Eidos Institute has targeted improvements in the access, participation, retention and success of Indigenous Australians in higher education and has identified and provided additional support to Indigenous secondary students willing to make the transition to university education.

The ‘Indigenous Sunrise Project’ sought to achieve its dual goals of building successful pathways for Indigenous students and raising the level of Indigenous undergraduate enrolments in higher education through a multi-pronged approach hinging around seven ‘themes’ involving collaborations between the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) and James Cook University (JCU).

The targeted programs that intertwined to comprise the Indigenous Sunrise Project collectively yielded a number of fresh and holistic perspectives with the potential to improve the educational outcomes of Indigenous Australians.

The study provided further evidence of the critical role Indigenous education workers play in raising Indigenous students aspirations and capitalising on these to encourage them to undertake further education.

The permanency of the pathways built by the Indigenous Sunrise Project are indicative of the dedication shown by the Eidos Institute in convening and facilitating research which invests in building and increasing the collective intellectual capital of the Australian nation.

The Eidos Institute remains committed to investing in human capital research projects such as the Indigenous Sunrise Project that aim to advance issues of importance to Australian productivity and well being.

The project team included Dr Maria Raciti (USC); Ms Juanita Sellwood (JCU); Dr Pauline Taylor (JCU); and Ms Nicole Copley (USC).
