brisbane welcomes international students - the expo

National Monday Update Issue:

The river end of the Queen St Mall in the centre of Brisbane was host to thousands of international students and their friends on a rather moist Saturday to celebrate their choice of Brisbane to conduct their studies.

ACPET was a major sponsor on the day and presented students with gifts and the ACPET  guide to Learning and Living in Brisbane 2010  that was prepared especially for the event. This guide was also presented to Lord Mayor Campbell Newman and offers students advice as to the essential information as well as their responsibilities and rights.

Brisbane education institutions and luminaries were out in force, with the ACPET marquee being host to Scott Shepphard, Deputy Vice Chancellor of QUT, Queensland Education and Training Internationals Dr Ken King; Mariana Lane from Independent Schools Queensland; John Aitken and Roger Scott from Brisbane Marketing and Susan Rees from Study Cairns as well as our most valued stakeholders, the students.

It was also great to see so many members and partners involved, including Fire and Rescue; Surf Lifesaving, Urban Nest; the Interchange Group; the Pad and OSHC.

The Lord Mayor and his team are to be congratulated for hosting such an event, arguably at a time when international students might be concerned over heightened media reports and changes to visa requirements.

It was great to see such a positive expression of the contributions of our international friends and for our local government to embrace and celebrate their presence ion Brisbane.
