National Monday Update Issue: 
A new funding round for grants from the Australia Korea Foundation (AKF) is currently open - closing date for submissions to the AKF is 18 March 2010.
Providers wishing to apply for this AKF funding are to submit a written expression of interest to Manolo Giacomina manolo [dot] giacomina [at] deta [dot] qld [dot] gov [dot] au at the VET Export Office by Friday 12 March 2010.  For those who are interested in meeting to discuss further the VET Export Office would be happy to set up a time on Monday 15 March. Please contact Manolo to arrange a mutually convenient time.
Written concept proposals should including the following:
  • Details of the potential Korean partner in the project
  • Principal objectives of the project
  • How the objectives are to be achieved
  • How does the project suit with the AKF strategic goals
  • Cost of the project
AKF/AKF Grant Background:
  • Following head-of-government-level visits in 1988-89, Australia Korea agreed to establish a group of influential members from the business, academic cultural and media sectors of both countries to identify new directions and areas of cooperation in the relationship between the two countries. The group - the Australia-Korea Forum - subsequently met in Canberra and in Sydney and brought down a series of recommendations aimed at broadening and strengthening bilateral ties, including a recommendation that each side establish a foundation to promote the relationship.
  • The Australia-Korea Foundation was established by the Australian Government in 1992.
  • AKF grants are intended to provide seed funds for innovative proposals that will achieve outcomes against one or more of the foundation goals as outlined in the AKF Strategic Plan 2009-12. This includes proposals which demonstrate the potential for the development of long-term links between individuals and institutions in Australia and counterparts in Korea.
AKF Strategic Goals:
  • Increase public awareness of Australia in Korea, and of Korea in Australia, and the importance of the bilateral relationship.
  • Develop partnerships in areas of shared interest in the bilateral, regional and global context.
  • Increase Australians' capacity to effectively engage with Korea.

Focus of funding applications:
  • develop contacts and exchanges between the peoples of Australia and Korea
  • broadening and strengthening bilateral ties and development of long-term links between individuals and institutions in Australia and counterparts in Korea
  • promotes people-to-people and institutional links
  • Provides funds for innovative proposals that will achieve outcomes against Foundation's goals: increased public awareness of Australia in the Republic of Korea and the importance of the bilateral
  • relationship; development of partnerships in areas of key interest to both countries.
  • Funding priority will be given to projects which have an identified Korean partner and seek to strengthen Australia's bilateral relationship with Korea in key areas including Education, Science and Technology.
Funding availability
  • Grants not available for conference travel, activities under bilateral agreements, activities commercially viable in their own right.
