In view of the agriculture industry facing challenges from rapidly changing markets and cost pressures, the need to incorporate new technology and to pursue new opportunities, the Department of Education has set up the first specific broad-based review of agricultural education conducted in WA since 1981 (chaired by the Hon. Hendy Cowan).
The review is designed to identify current and future requirements of the agricultural sector and examine whether agricultural education is presently being fully catered for by the university sector or training sector. It would also identify the future needs of universities and training organisations offering agricultural education at all levels and examine the pathways between schools and further education in this area.
The review is will also consider expansion, rationalisation or restructuring of programs and effective co-operation between the organisations involved and facilities available for agricultural education. The Muresk Institute will be examined and its place in providing a tertiary agricultural program. Options for combining the tertiary program with educational programs of similar disciplines will also be investigated.
